13. Your Future is Predictable

If you stay with a job you hate, that has no future, then you have no future. Why do people knowingly stay when the outcome is misery, hopelessness and guaranteed poverty? Fear and inertia. They are scared to change because of fear of loss. They don’t want to lose what little they have. Desperation overrides imagination. Inertia is when you stay on that path because that’s what you have always done. Deep set habits and avoidance.

The only way to overcome these self-imposed obstacles is a desire for change greater than the fear and inertia. Here’s how to get that desire. First realize that you are dead already. It may have not occurred yet for you but it is inevitable. It’s a 100% guaranteed outcome of life. As Jim Morrison (The Doors) so eloquently stated it “Nobody gets out of here alive”. As this reality is consciously accepted you discover that you in fact have nothing to lose. You can quit your job and leave your totally unsatisfactory existence behind. In the end it’s your choice.

Also consider that for all practical purpose it is illegal for anybody to starve to death in the USA. Food is everywhere and for free. Rarely are people forced to sleep in a box outside in the cold. It’s not all that difficult to find some kind of shelter. Many people living on the streets get paid to be homeless. They are approached by those angelic beings, the wonderful and virtuous paid workers from the kind-hearted NGOs. They siphon off exorbitant salaries and other benefits for themselves off the top. Many homeless are indeed mentally ill and can’t help themselves. Society has failed them. Many choose to be “homeless” because they want to continue drinking and drugging without interference. A coward’s way to end it all.

So let’s look at the worst case and best case outcomes. The worst is that you are uncomfortable but alive floundering around on the streets. The best is a life worth living. Independent, prosperous, happy and grateful. Is this decision hard to make?
